Why do you hate the Leafs?!

I'm just curious...I want some reasons here...it's pretty common for everyone to hate the Leafs...aside from the Leafs fans. Anyway throw some reasons my way!

Because my favorite show (HNIC) has been shoving them down my throat for my entire life. So many times I turn on the T.V. hoping to see a great Ottawa, Pittsburgh game (for example), only to learn that the HNIC has decided to show Toronto, Florida instead. It has frustrated me 5-10 times a year since I was six. That is a lot of pent up frustration.

To expand on what Ryan said...pretty much all major media, cultural institutions, etc in (English) Canada are located in Toronto. That leads to a situation where much of the media tends to reflect the concerns, interests, obsessions et al of Torontonians as if they represent the entire country. This leads a lot of Canadians outside of the GTA to feel resentful of Toronto and see Torontonians as self-satisfied, self-obsessed, and unaware of anything east of Oshawa or west of Milton. There's really nothing comparable in the US, because here NYC is counterbalanced by LA, Chicago, DC, etc to a much greater extent than Vancouver, Montreal, etc counterbalance Toronto.

The Leafs are wrapped up in this resentment/irritation because they represent Toronto, and because as with other matters Torontonian, they're often held up as "Canada's Team" especially by the CBC, even though there are five other NHL teams in Canada.

I'm far less annoyed by the Leafs now that I'm back in the States and don't have to deal with the Toronto-centric media. I'm also really quite fond of the city of Toronto, although I don't like the Toronto-The-Centre-of-the-Universe as it is in the media, etc.

I will echo Ryan's thoughts exactly. Too much of the LEafs on CBC! Let's see some other teams!

Because when they win, it's despite the refs, and when they lose, it's because of the refs.

Darcy Tucker.

They clearly don't care about winning, only making money. Which is convenient, since a blind monkey throwing darts could turn a profit in Leaf-land.

They have some sort of co-dependency thing going with Sundin, which prevents him from moving on to a real franchise.

Their socks have too many stripes.

Their "top four" (sarcastic quotes) defensemen "earn" (more sarcastic quotes) over $18 million while having a combined +19 rating. There are currently fifteen *individual* D-men in the league that are +19 or better. If you take these fifteen plus the Leafs "top four" and rank them by salary, Leafs occupy slots 2, 4, 5, and 13. Well played, JFJ!

I Love to Hate the Maple Griefs. Well, what’s to like. From Western Cdn perspective (I’m from Calgary), there’s a foul stench in the East that consumes our resources and pollutes our air-waves. In other words, we pay a lot of $$ to have the CBC shove Maple Grief Hockey down our throats.

But, I LOVE to hate the Maple Griefs for two reasons:

I love my son.
I love the colour blue.

A few years ago, my young son surprised me with a present. I could tell by his expression that my adoration was anticipated. It was Blue Maple Leafs jersey. I choked, my eyes welled with tears, but not for the anticipated reasons. My Gosh!, it was a Maple Griefs Jersey. What was I to do?

As I strained to deliver the anticipated “Thank you. It is great!”, my little boy said, “You love BLUE and you love HOCKEY. I knew that you would love it.” AS I accepted my baby’s hug, I realized that I would never look at the Maple Leafs the same again.

Now I live in the US. Mind you, I still hate Toronto and all things emanating from it, but I love my son and I do love my BLUE jersey.

I live in Detroit. If the Leafs-Habs rivalry is the biggest and nastiest in hockey, the Wings-Leafs rivalry--until they were moved to the East, anyway--was the 1B rivalry. We've got a long, bloody, nasty history of pitched playoff battles against one another.

Until satellite TV became prevalent, you had two choices for your hockey viewing in Detroit--Wings games and Hockey Night in Canada, and HNIC would always show Leaf games. You learn pretty early on in life to root for whoever plays against the Leafs.

Worse, Windsor, which is actually south of Detroit, is split 50-50 between Leaf fans and Wings fans, and it grates on us that people who live closer to the Joe than we do see us as the "bad guy." The fact that the whole border-town relationship gets complicated by Windsorites who believe that they can't root for an American team is grating.

For me personally, it's guttural. The first Wings games I went to were games against the Leafs. The first playoff game I attended? Game 7 of the Wings-Leafs series in 1994. I was four rows behind the bench when the Leafs beat us in OT, and you'd think that they'd won the Cup.

I despise the Leafs now. Attending the Wings-Leafs game last December (which we WON) was like Ralphie from A Christmas Story getting his Red Ryder BB gun.

People talk about how nasty the Wings-Avs rivalry was. I think it's the only rivalry that gives the Wings-Leafs one a run for its money.

hey, I hate the leafs naturally because I am a montreal fan, But it is also because they are "the center of the earth". CBC loves them Bob Cole rants about their superiority, I hate that so f***ing much!!!!!!!

For the record, I'm a sens fan. This is why I hate the leafs:
Every time there's an ottawa home game agains the leafs, the corel center gets over-run with these howling buffoons wearing leaf jerseys. You know what, maybe I just hate leaf fans. Who blindly loves a team that can't win, exists only to make money for the faceless institution that owns them, and plays them for suckers year in and year out... oh yes, and tonight, after a leaf checked alfredsson (ottawa's captain) so hard that now he's out with a serious injury, right before the playoffs) they had the audacity to cheer LOUDLY. Who does that??? There is NO CLASS in Toronto folks!
